My News 150318

I have made a perfect (as I think) Linux ARM system for Raspberry Pi 2. I call it RaspEX. It is based on Debian Jessie (upcoming Debian 8), Ubuntu Vivid Vervet (upcoming Ubuntu 15.04) and Linaro (Open Source software for ARM SoCs).

What is Raspberry Pi?
The Raspberry Pi is a low cost, credit-card sized computer that plugs into a computer monitor or TV, and uses a standard keyboard and mouse. It is a capable little device that enables people of all ages to explore computing, and to learn how to program in languages like Scratch and Python. It’s capable of doing everything you’d expect a desktop computer to do, from browsing the internet and playing high-definition video, to making spreadsheets, word-processing, and playing games.

Softpedia’s review (excerpt)
RaspEX is a commercial operating system for the Raspberry Pi 2 computer board. It is a Linux distribution based on the well known Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) and Debian GNU/Linux 8 (Jessie) operating systems, built around the lightweight LXDE desktop environment and open-source software packages for ARM SoCs from Linaro.

A complete desktop system for the Raspberry Pi 2
RaspEX it’s not a simple distribution with only some basic packages thrown on top of a window manager/desktop environment just for fun, just to prove that Linux works well on Raspberry Pi 2.The fact of the matter is that it’s a complete Linux kernel-based desktop system built around LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment), an energy-saving and extremely fast-performing desktop environment with numerous powerful open-source programs pre-installed.

My Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 builds now reviewed by Softpedia

softpediaMy Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 builds 150301 and 150307 were reviewed by Softpedia 150319.

These special builds of the Android-x86 Linux operating system are currently distributed as Live CD ISO images that contain software packages optimized only for 32-bit (x86) hardware architectures

Comes with Google Play Store, Aptoide App Manager and many cool applications
As mentioned, these are special builds of the original Android-x86 project that include the official Google Play Store application, allowing the user to install all sorts of Android applications on their computers. The second build of this special Android-x86 operating system runs even a newer kernel, version 3.18.8, and uses the Aptoide App Manager package manager instead of Google Play Store.

Among the pre-installed applications, we can mention Quickoffice, Google Now Launcher, Gmail, Netflix, Keep, Facebook, Drive, RSS Reader, Spotify, Play Newsstand, Play Movies & TV, Speech Recorder, Calibration, LIME-HD Settings, File Manager, Play Books, and Superuser. Softpedia’s articles about AndEX (Android) Lollipop

AndEX (Android) Lollipop is now on Softpedia.
Review page: http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Linux-Distributions/AndEX-103735.shtml
It appears to include all the stock Android applications, such as the Google Chrome web browser, Google Calendar, Google Maps, the stock Android web browser, as well as the Email, Clock, Calculator, Phone, Navigation, Music, Gallery, Messaging, and File Manager apps.

In addition, AndEX includes the Aptoide App Store that allows users to install more apps, and many other useful apps, including Advanced Facebook, Nature Live Wallpapers, Bulmedia Gallery, WeLine, YourMap, RSS Reader, WiFi Analyzer, Quickoffice, Speech Recorder, Terminal Emulator, and Like.

Bottom line
In conclusion, AndEX proves to be a good competitor for the Android x86 operating system, which is currently based on the Android 4.4 Kit Kat mobile OS from Google. Unfortunately, it will only run on modern, powerful computers, as old hardware components are not currently supported.

…and here’s a nice article about AndEX: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Run-Android-5-0-2-Lollipop-on-Your-PC-with-AndEX-Live-CD-475695.shtml
Arne Exton had the pleasure of informing Softpedia about its brand-new Android-based Live CD operating system that allows anyone to run the latest Android 5.0.2 “Lollipop” mobile operating system on desktop or laptop computers. The distribution uses Arne’s special Linux kernel 3.10.58-exton-android-x86+, which includes support for the NTFS file system, as well as some extra drivers.

While the well-known Android x86 project already offers a live operating system based on Google’s Android mobile operating system, which is used on all sorts of mobile devices worldwide, the AndEX project brings the game of running Android on PCs to a new level, as it uses the latest Android 5.0.2 Lollipop OS instead of the old 4.4 Kit Kat one.

Softpedia: Exton|OS is the first to include Linux kernel 3.19

Softpedia 150211
After releasing the first GNU/Linux distribution with Linux 3.18 kernel a couple of days after its launch back in December 2014, Arne Exton did it again, as he just announced today on Twitter that the his Exton|OS with MATE has been updated to version 150211 and includes a custom 3.19.0-5-exton kernel package based on the upstream Linux kernel 3.19.

In other words, Exton|OS is the first distribution to include the brand-new Linux kernel 3.19, which means that the operating system will offer all the features of Linux kernel 3.19. Besides having an Ubuntu 14.10 base, the Exton|OS computer operating system borrows features from the forthcoming Debian 8 (Jessie) distro, which is currently in development.
