Run your Ubuntu/Debian 64 bit system with the latest kernel – 4.18.3!

linuxI have compiled yet another Ubuntu/Debian kernel for 64 bit systems. This time kernel 4.18.3-exton, equivalent to Kernel.org’s latest kernel 4.18.3 released yesterday (180818).

What’s new in Linux kernel 4.18?

Install kernel 4.18.3-exton in Ubuntu/Debian based distributions
My self-compiled Ubuntu kernels can be used in all types of modern Ubuntu systems, including Mint. They can even be used in Debian Stretch (Debian 9) and Debian Buster (upcoming Debian 10). If you want to use my kernel 4.18.3-exton for 64 bit systems, you can DOWNLOAD it from here.

Installation instructions
Open the zip-file with WinZip, WinRAR or 7-Zip. Or run this command: unzip ubuntu-kernel-64bit-4.18.3-exton.zip. Go into the folder ubuntu-kernel-64bit-4.18.3-exton and run this command:
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Then: Run command sudo update-grub (if you use Grub2).

Nvidia
It is possible to install Nvidia’s proprietary drivers if you use “my” kernel 4.18.3-exton. Could be useful if you like to play games. The Nvidia drivers in for example Ubuntu’s repositories – “Current” etc. – can’t be used. It is supposed to be “impossible” to install Nvidia’s latest drivers when running kernel 4.18 without “patches” etc. On the other hand it’s a fact that kernel 4.18 has better support for the open-source Nvidia driver Nouveau than any other older kernel.

A small clarification
“My” kernel 4.18.3-exton is compiled (almost) the same way as all official Ubuntu kernels. That is, The Ubuntu Way. If not, the kernel would not function in a Ubuntu/Debian system.

Good luck!

Run your Ubuntu/Debian 64 bit system with the latest kernel – 4.8.0-rc8!

linuxI have compiled yet another Ubuntu/Debian kernel for 64 bit systems. This time kernel 4.8.0-18-exton, equivalent to Kernel.org’s latest kernel 4.8.0-rc8 released 160926.

What’s new in Linux kernel 4.8?

Install kernel 4.8.0-18-exton in Ubuntu/Debian based distributions
My self-compiled Ubuntu kernels can be used in all types of modern Ubuntu systems, including Mint. They can even be used in Debian Jessie (Debian 8.6) and Debian Stretch (upcoming Debian 9). If you want to use my kernel 4.8.0-18-exton for 64 bit systems, you can DOWNLOAD it from here.

Installation instructions
Open the zip-file with WinZip, WinRAR or 7-Zip. Or run this command: unzip ubuntu-kernel-64bit-4.8.0-18-exton.zip. Go into the folder ubuntu-kernel-64bit-4.8.0-18-exton and run this command:

The Nvidia drivers in for example Ubuntu’s repositories – “Current” etc. – can’t be used. It is supposed to be “impossible” to install Nvidia’s latest drivers when running kernel 4.7 – 4.8 without “patches” etc. On the other hand it’s a fact that kernel 4.8 has better support for the open-source Nvidia driver Nouveau than any other older kernel. If you want to install Nvidia’s proprietary driver be sure to download version NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-370.28.run. It won’t need any patches.

SlackEX (Slackware 14.2/Current) live USB with kernel 4.5.1 and KDE 4.14.18

slackware_logoI have made yet another version of SlackEX. It has the latest kernel (4.5.1, released 160412) and the latest KDE (4.14.18) Desktop Environment.

New features in version 160413 of SlackEX
I have replaced kernel 4.4.1-x86_64-exton with kernel 4.5.1-x86_64-exton with support for “everything”. Most important is that I have changed repositories from Slackware 14.1 to Current. I.e. Slackware 14.2. KDE is upgraded to version 4.14.18 (latest KDE version). All other component software is also upgraded to the latest Slackware Current version by now. I may also mention in particular GParted 0.24.0 (latest, not in Slackware’s repositories), VirtualBox 5.0.16 (latest, not in Slackware’s repositories), Google Chrome 46.0.2490.86 (not in Slackware’s repositories), Gimp 2.8.10 (installed from source), GSlapt 0.5.3h, Firefox 45.0.2, Thunderbird 38.7, Samba 4.3.2 and GCC 5.3.0. Furthermore I have installed Grub2, which can be used as boot loader (if you want) after a hard drive install. Study the full package LIST. Note: I have replaced Wicd with NetworkManager. It works better. Most important: This version of SlackEX has to be installed to a USB Pen Drive!

Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 build 7 with GAPPS, kernel 4.0.8-exton-android-x86, Bluetooth (working!) and Mesa 10.5.9

desktop-kitkat-v7-smallAndroid-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 Exton build 150721, version 7, is a total rebuild.
I’ve added Mesa (3D Graphics Library) 10.5.9 for better Graphic performance. It has enabled hardware acceleration for Nvidia (Nouveau) and VMware (vmwgfx). The system can run live (from CD or a USB stick) on almost all laptops (and some Desktop computers). For example Acer (Aspire), HP, Samsung, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo, Thinkpad, Fujitsu, Panasonic and Ausus laptops. The Android system is distributed in the form of an ISO file as the rest of my Linux distributions. I.e. you must (as usual) burn the ISO file to a CD if you want to run the system live on your computer or install it to hard drive. Read about how to burn ISO files. Or skip that. Just use ImgBurn. Nothing can go wrong. You can easily install the system to your hard drive and install new apps. You can also install new apps while running the system live. Google Play Store is pre-installed so you can just make your choices…

Used kernel
4.0.8-exton-android-x86.

Replacement
This version (version 7) replaces all my previous (6) Android-x86 4.4.4 KitKat builds. In version 7 (as in version 6) I’ve added GAPPS. I.e. Google Play Services, Google Play Store, Maps, YouTube and more apps (for example Bluetooth File Transfer). Everything just works.
