Exton|Defender SRS based on Fedora Rawhide (fc 39/40) with Cinnamon and Deepin Desktops which you can completely change and rebuild :: Build 231109

Description
Exton|Defender SRS is a Linux system available as a Live DVD based on Fedora Rawhide, 64bit. (Rawhide is the development version of Fedora). Exton|Defender is for administrating or repairing your system and data after a crash. Exton|Defender aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the hard disk partitions. It comes with a lot of Linux software such as system tools and basic tools (editors, Midnight Commander, network tools). Exton|Defender can, however, also be used as a normal Linux Desktop System. It requires no hard drive installation, but can easily be installed to hard drive if you want. Desktop environments: Special versions of Deepin and Cinnamon developed by Fedora.

231111: HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU!
Today I discovered (by chance) that you can install Exton|Defender Build 231109 to a USB stick with persistence! I.e. all your system changes will be saved directly on the USB stick. Even big system upgrades! That will make it unnecessary to install Exton|Defender to hard drive (which can be a bit tricky). Just run the System from a big enough USB stick and be happy! Do it like this:
1. Use Rufus 4.3 for the installation.
2. Set a Persistent partition size of about 3GB before you start the installation. Watch this screenshot…
3. Run Exton|Defender from your created USB stick. Be sure boot up the System in Legacy mode. You can run the System also in UEFI mode, but unfortunately persistence won’t be enabled then.
4. Test run Exton|Defender and change some things. For example new bookmarks in Firefox. Reboot!
5. You changes should be left if you have done what I said above. Now you can upgrade the whole system with “sudo dnf upgrade –refresh”. About 230 packages can be upgraded as of 231111. Watch this screenshot…
6. Finally you can make a new ISO (your own) if you want. Be sure to change /etc/refractasnapshot.conf first. You must see to that the new ISO file and the work environment will be created on another partition. Watch this screenshot…
7. Start Refractasnapshot in a terminal with the command “sudo /usr/bin/refractasnapshot”. Follow the instructions. After a few minutes your ISO will be ready. Watch this screenshot…

NEWS 231109 ABOUT Exton|Defender Rawhide (Fedora 39/40)
I’ve made a new version of Exton|Defender 64 bit based on Fedora “Rawhide” (the development version of Fedora). I.e. upcoming Fedora 39/40. This new version uses the Cinnamon and Deepin Desktops. Log in to the Desktop environment you prefer. Study all other installed packages.
MOST IMPORTANT CHANGE: I’ve finally managed to install Refracta Snapshot in Exton|Defender, which means that you can create your own Fedora Rawhide System! I mean change everything to your liking and then create a new ISO.
NOTE1: For Refracta Snapshot to work you have to run “my” kernel 6.5.3-amd64-exton when Refracta Snapshot is running. (It won’t work with Fedora’s kernel 6.7).
NOTE2: Version 231109 of Exton|Defender can run on really old computers. As an example I could run it on my 17 years old laptop Acer Aspire 5102 WLMi.

THE IMPORTANCE OF Exton|Defender being based on upcoming fc 39/40
Programs won’t “crash” or anything like that. And I haven’t noticed any “bugs”. That said you should of course be a bit careful. This version of Exton|Defender is for people who like to use “cutting-edge” software and the latest kernels etc. You will always have the latest Linux/Fedora software installed if you regularly run the command sudo dnf upgrade ‐‐refresh.

DebEX Gnome based on Debian Sid/Trixie with Gnome 43.4, Refracta Snapshot and kernel 6.5.6-amd64-exton :: Build 231106

NEWS 231106 about DebEX Gnome – a Refracta efi Build
I have made a new extra version of DebEX, which I call DebEX Gnome Live System. It’s a pure Debian system using the testing (Trixie) and unstable (Sid) repositories. Gnome 43.4 is used as Desktop environment. I have removed the Mate Desktop, since Gnome now can be used on all kind of computers. Also when running DebEX in VirtualBox and VMware. No need for Nvidia’s proprietary graphics drivers when running this new version of DebEX. You can of course install such drivers if you want to. Furthermore I have replaced Google Chrome with Firefox ESR. It is now possible to watch Netflix movies using Firefox ESR in Linux. I have also replaced Refracta Installer with Calamares Installer, which makes it possible to install DebEX Gnome in any language. You can even use Calamares in VirtualBox and VMware – i.e. non-efi computers.

All installed packages have been updated to the latest version as of 231106. DebEX Gnome uses kernel 6.5.6-amd64-exton.

THE REAL McCoy
DebEX is a pure Debian system. I.e. no traces of Ubuntu, Kubuntu etc. New releases of Ubuntu are always based on Debian Sid. So is DebEX.

DebEX KDE based on Debian Sid/Trixie with KDE Plasma 5.27.8-1, Refracta Snapshot and kernel 6.5.6-amd64-exton :: Build 231030

NEWS 231030 about DebEX KDE Plasma a Refracta Build
I have made a new extra version of DebEX KDE Plasma Live DVDefi. It’s a pure Debian Sid/Trixie System. There are no Ubuntu or Kubuntu elements involved in DebEX. DebEX KDE Plasma Sid uses the KDE Plasma Desktop 5.27.8-1 – latest version, released 230912 – as Desktop environment. Kernel 6.5.6-amd64-exton is used. All included packages have been updated to the latest version as of 231030. In Build 231030 I have added LURE (Linux User REpository). LURE is intended to bring the AUR to all distros. It is currently in an alpha state and may not be stable. It can download a repository, build packages in it using a bash script similar to PKGBUILD, and then install them using your system package manager. Read about how to use LURE…

Create you own Debian Sid/Trixie System using Refracta Snapshot. So easy that a ten year old child can do it!

VirtualBox Guest Additions and VMware Tools are pre-installed, which mean that you can run DebEX KDE in full screen – see the screenshots below.

ABOUT Ventoy
There is no REAL need for a multibootcd anymore. You can use Ventoy and just drop/copy any Linux ISO to a USB stick and run it from there. Ventoy is an open source tool to create bootable USB drive for ISO files. With Ventoy, you don’t need to format the disk again and again, you just need to copy the iso file to the USB drive and boot it. You can copy many iso files at a time and Ventoy will give you a boot menu to select them – screenshot. READ MORE about Ventoy…
So I should really abandon my multibootcd project…

ExTiX Deepin 23.9-2 Live based on Deepin 23 BETA2 (latest) with Refracta Snapshot and kernel 6.5.4-extix-amd64-desktop-hwe :: Build 230924

NEWS 230924 ABOUT ExTiX with Deepin 23 BETA2
I’ve released a new version of ExTiX Deepin today (230924). The previous ExTiX Deepin 23 version is from 230903. This ExTiX Build is based on Deepin 23 BETA2 (latest version) released by Deepin Technology on September 18, 2023. Please read the Release Notes. As you can see the developers urge people to try Deepin BETA2 in a non-production environment! I must say, though, that I haven’t discovered any “bugs”. And the installed programs won’t “crash” or anything like that. On the contrary ExTiX Deepin 23.9-2 with the Deepin DE 23 BETA2 works pretty well I would say. I have nevertheless kept ExTiX 22.12 with Deepin 20.8 on the server. Deepin 20.8/20.9 is the stable version released 221208. ExTiX 23.9-2 uses kernel 6.5.4-extix-amd64-desktop-hwe. ExTiX 23.9-2 works in the same way as all other ExTiX versions. I.e. you can install it to hard drive while running the system live. Use Refracta Installer for that. You can also create your own live installable Deepin 23 system with Refracta Snapshot. (Using ExTiX 23.9-2 as a “base system”). So easy that a ten year old child can do it!

Study all installed packages in ExTiX Deepin 23.9-2.

RLRH EXTON Linux Live System compatible with Rocky Linux 9.2 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux® :: Build 230922

ABOUT RLRH EXTON Build 230922
RLRH EXTON is a LIVE version of Rocky Linux 9.2 which is also compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux®. Rocky Linux is an open-source enterprise operating system designed to be 100% bug-for-bug compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux®. It is under intensive development by the community.

LIVE LINUX SYSTEM
You can run RLRH EXTON live (i.e. from a DVD or USB stick) on EFI and non-EFI computers. (Rocky Linux is not a LIVE system). From Wikipedia: A live CD or live DVD is a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM containing a bootable computer operating system. Live CDs are unique in that they have the ability to run a complete, modern operating system on a computer lacking mutable secondary storage, such as a hard disk drive.

CREATE YOUR OWN Rocky Linux System
You can also create your own Rocky Linux system using Refracta Snapshot, which is pre-installed. I.e. change everything to your liking and then create a new ISO. That can be done after a hard drive installation. If you have plenty of RAM it is also possible to create a new ISO while running RLRH EXTON live.

MORE ABOUT RLRH EXTON
Gnome 40 is used as DE. Two kernels are installed – 6.5.3-1.el9.elrepo.x86_64 and 6.5.3-amd64-exton. Use the one you prefer (after a hard drive installation).

INSTALL TO HARD DRIVE
Install to hard drive during a live session using Refracta Installer. Do it like this in VirtualBox or VMware:
1. Prepare an install partition of about 3OGB and a SWAP partition of 2GB in advance.
2. Open up a terminal as root and run the command refractainstaller. Follow the instructions – watch screenshot 1.
3. Refrain from installing a boot loader (Grub2) – watch screenshot 2. Refracta Installer is made for Debian systems so installing Grub2 won’t work. You’ll have to chroot to do that.
4. Chroot and install Grub2. Read my INSTRUCTION. I.e. run command 1) – 8). Watch this screenshot…
IMPORTANT NOTE: You shall not use Refracta Installer for installing Grub2 on EFI computers. If you already have one Linux system installed on your computer you can just edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg or /etc/grub.d/40_custom so that RLRH EXTON can boot. Read this INSTRUCTION…
You may also benefit from reading my instruction How-to dual-boot, triple-boot or multi-boot Linux with Windows in a simple way and be happy…

USING REFRACTA SNAPSHOT
Open up a terminal as root and run the command refractasnapshot. The just follow the instructions given by the program. Watch this screenshot when Refracta Snapshot has started and this screenshot when everything is ready. The whole process will only take a few minutes to complete. You’ll find your new ISO in /home/snapshot.
NOTE 1: You will get a message saying that your ISO won’t boot on EFI computers. Just ignore it. I have fixed this issue.

PASSWORDS
Log in as the normal user user with password live or as root with password root. While logged in as user you can use Sudo to become root.

Samba client
You can use Gnome Files (Nautilus File Manager) to connect to your Windows computers in your Home Network. Watch this screenshot.

Wireless connections
Normally NetworkManager works very well in RLRH EXTON. Just add your WiFi Network password and connect – watch this screenshot…

Package Management in RPM-based distros
Read this instruction about DNF. DNF is the successor program of YUM (Yellowdog Updater Modified) and is the default package manager on Fedora and RHEL. The name DNF is short for Dandified YUM.
Basically there are only three commands to use:
1. sudo dnf upgrade ‐‐refresh
2. sudo dnf install MyUsefulPackage
3. sudo dnf remove MyBadPackage

VirtualBox/VMware
VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed so you can run RLRH EXTON in full screen both in VirtualBox and VMware.

Study all installed packages in RLRH EXTON Build 230922.

NOTE: You can only use Refracta Snapshot while “my” kernel 6.5.3-amd64-exton is running.

How to change kernels
After a hard drive installation you can change to one of Rocky Linux original kernels by running this command:
sudo dracut ‐‐kver 6.5.3-1.el9.elrepo.x86_64
(Then reboot of course).

UNIQUE

RLRH EXTON is unique. I.e. there is no other live version of Rocky Linux around (as far as I know).

SCREENSHOTS
1. The GDM login screen. If you want to log in as root to Gnome you shall choose “Not listed?”.
2. Showing how to fix a wired Network connection (sometimes necessary).
3. Showing how to mount a NTFS partition. The package ntfs-3g has to be installed first. Do it with the command sudo dnf install ntfs-3g. (I forgot to do that).
4. RLRH EXTON is running in VMware.

DOWNLOAD

RLRH EXTON 64bit version 230922 can be downloaded from SourceForge.netFast, secure and free downloads from the largest Open Source applications and software directory.

RaspArch Rpi4 Build 230908 :: Run Arch Linux with Enlightenment DE on your new Raspberry Pi 4 computer :: Install using Rufus 4.2, Win32 Disk Imager or Etcher in Windows!

RaspArch Build 230908 especially for the “new” Raspberry Pi 4 released in May 2020
This version (230908) is especially made for the “new” Raspberry Pi 4, but it can of course also be used on a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B and Raspberry Pi 2 Model B.

RaspArch is a “remaster” of Arch Linux ARM. The original compressed system is of about 230 MB. When I added the Enlightenment 0.25.4 (latest version) Desktop Environment (DE), the LXDE DE, PulseAudio, Firefox, Yay, Gimp and NetworkManager the system size increased a lot. RaspArch is a “ready-to-go” ARM system. It must be installed on a Raspberry Pi 4, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B or Raspberry Pi 2 Model B computer. RaspArch Build 230908 replaces RaspArch Build 221202. Build 221202 had only the LXDE DE installed. I.e. not Enlightenment.

NEWS in RaspArch Build 230908
A new kernel – 6.1.47-1-rpi-ARCH. All included packages have been updated to the latest version as of 230908. I’ve also replaced Yaourt with Yay – Yet Another Yogurt – An AUR Helper Written in Go. I came to know that Yaourt is dead. I.e. Yaourt is not being developed anymore. I have also installed PulseAudio. I’ve replaced the LightDM Display Manager with SLiM. Finally the sound works very well in RaspArch. Nice if you like YouTube. I’ve also replaced Wicd with NetworkManager. It works better. NOTE: To be able to install Yay I had to install a lot of development tools. When logged in as the normal user archpi you will enjoy the Enlightenment DE. When logged in as root you will enter the LXDE DE from SLiM. The password for archpi is raspberry. The password for root is root.

NEWS 230903 ABOUT ExTiX with Deepin 23 BETA
I’ve released a new version of ExTiX Deepin today (230903). The previous ExTiX Deepin 23 version is from 230403. This ExTiX Build is based on Deepin 23 BETA (latest version) released by Deepin Technology in May 2023. Please read the Release Notes. As you can see the developers urge people to try Deepin BETA in a non-production environment! I must say, though, that I haven’t discovered any “bugs”. And the installed programs won’t “crash” or anything like that. On the contrary ExTiX Deepin 23.9 with the Deepin DE 23 works pretty well I would say. I have nevertheless kept ExTiX 22.12 with Deepin 20.8 on the server. Deepin 20.8/20.9 is the stable version released 221208. ExTiX 23.9 uses kernel 6.5.0-extix-amd64-desktop-hwe. ExTiX 23.9 works in the same way as all other ExTiX versions. I.e. you can install it to hard drive while running the system live. Use Refracta Installer for that.
