PuppEX Bionic 64 bit, uefi, compatible with Ubuntu 18.04 :: Build 190331

NEWS 190331
Yesterday I released my first version of PuppEX Bionic64. After that I have discovered a way to install and run Spotify in PuppEX. So now you can run YouTube, Netflix and Spotify in the new PuppEX version of 190331. What more can one wish for?

ABOUT PuppEX Bionic Build 190331
My newest Puppy derivative is built from Puppy Linux 8.0 BionicPup 64 bit. I have added Google Chrome (for Netflix), PCManFM, LXTerminal and many development tools. I have also compiled a new kernel – 5.0.5-puppex. Kernel 5.0.5 is the latest stable kernel available from Kernel.org as of 190330. Furthermore I have installed Nvidia’s Proprietary Graphics driver 418.56. The Nvidia driver will be used if your computer/card is “good/modern” enough. If not automatically just open up a terminal and run the command nvidia-xconfig. Then restart X. Note: Firefox can’t be used in Puppy Linux. You won’t have sound.

PuppEX Bionic64 is compatible with Ubuntu 18.04, which means that Ubuntu packages for Ubuntu 18.04 can be installed and used in PuppEX. The PuppEX Bionic ISO is of 827 MB.

Performance
Puppy Bionic64 original is of only 354 MB. PuppEX Bionic64 is despite this still running as fast as the original, which means it runs very, very fast compared to most other Linux systems. (Puppy/PuppEX runs from RAM).

Android-x86_64 Pie 9.0 with Aptoide App Manager, Netflix, Spotify, Firefox with YouTube, Clash of Clans and Angry Birds – Build 190326

NEWS 190326 about AndEX Pie 9.0
My new build of Android x86_64 – andex_x86_64-pie-9.0-aptoide-netflix-spotify-clashofclans-1650mb-190326.iso can be installed to hard drive or on a USB stick. You can also run the system live. I.e. from a DVD or a USB stick. On some computers you’ll have to start up AndEX 9.0 in compatibility mode (VESA) though. The sound and video performance is generally very very good. Aptoide App Manager works very well in this build of AndEX Pie. So does the Netflix and Spotify app. I have unfortunately not been able to install Google Play Store and other GAPPS. Aptoide works as a good replacement for Google Play Store though.

Screenshot– AndEX Pie Build 190326 – the Desktop with many nice apps installed. (The apps Popcorn Time, Mi Home and Racing in Car 2 are not pre-installed).

MORE NEWS 190326 about AndEX Pie 9.0
My new build of Android-x86_64 Pie 9.0 have Aptoide App Manager pre-installed. Also many other apps. For example: Netflix, Spotify, ES File Explorer, AIDA64, Firefox, Angry Birds and Clash of Clans. YouTube works very well in Firefox.

MORE ABOUT AndEX Pie
My new compiled Android-x86_64 system (Pie 9.0) can run and be installed on almost all newer laptops (and some Desktop computers). For example Acer (Aspire), HP, Samsung, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo, Thinkpad, Fujitsu, Panasonic and Asus laptops. You can (of course) also run AndEX in VirtualBox and/or VMware. I can also mention that I could run my new Pie version without problems on a HP Pavilion 500-317no Desktop Computer. You can very easy do a manual installation to hard drive. That can also be done to a drive where you already have another Linux system (for example Ubuntu 18.10) installed. Read more about how to install AndEX Pie below.

Android Pie 9.0 was released 180806.

About YouTube

For some reason the sound in YouTube works (much) better when running YouTube in Firefox. I.e. compared to when using the YouTube app. The YouTube app is therefore not pre-installed.

About Facebook
The Facebook app works very well in AndEX. Just go get it with Aptoide App Manager.

What’s the point?
Well, if you like your Android phone and all the apps you have installed on it I’m sure you will also like to run apps from your laptop. Bigger screen and better sound etc. Also: In AndEX Pie Build 190326 many new apps and games can be installed via Aptoide App Manager. You can even install very big games (of 1GB or so), but unfortunately almost all such games need a touchscreen. Still not convinced? Then read my article about “How useful an Androx-x86 system can be for the average computer user“.

RaspEX Kodi Rpi3 with LXDE and Kodi 18.1 Media Center “Leia” with Netflix, Plex and Amazon Video addons – Build 190321

ABOUT RaspEX Kodi
RaspEX Kodi Build 190321 with LXDE/Kodi Desktops can be downloaded from SourceForge.net for free. The system is made especially for the new Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, but can of course also be used on a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B and a Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. RaspEX Kodi is based on Debian, Raspbian and Kodi Media Center. In RaspEX Kodi I’ve added the LXDE Desktop with many useful applications such as VLC Media Player and NetworkManager. Makes it easy to configure your wireless network. I’ve also upgraded Kodi to version 18.1 Leia, which makes it possible to include useful addons such as Netflix, Plex and Amazon Video. Which I’ve done. Study all included packages in RaspEX Kodi.

Replacements
My first version of RaspEX Kodi from 190124 was a replacement for RaspEX Kodi with OSMC, which was released 190117. Sam Nazarko (founder of OSMC) contacted me 190118 claiming that I was “violating” his rights to the trademark OSMC and the rules in GPLv2. I don’t think I did, but I’m also very tired. Therefore I made a new version (190124) of RaspEX Kodi without any traces of OSMC. I would say that version 190124 and 190321 are as good as the old one from 190117. I.e. excellent video and sound performance both in Kodi and LXDE. For version 190124 I charged 9 $. This new version (190321) can be downloaded for free from SourceForge.net. People should not refrain from downloading RaspEX Kodi because of the money issue.  I want all Linux and Raspberry Pi enthusiasts to enjoy the system. It runs very well on a Raspberry Pi. I.e. fast and responsive.

Kernel
Kernel 5.0.2-raspex-v7+ is used.

RaspEX Kodi performance
RaspEX Kodi is a very fast and responsive Rpi system. Much due to very low memory (RAM) usage. About 120 MB as this screenshot shows. I’ve said that RaspEX LXDE Build 181015 is very fast. RaspEX Kodi is even faster especially if you use the new Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ to run it. The video and sound quality is also very very good. Even while running RaspEX Kodi on big TV screens. I.e. you can really enjoy Netflix and YouTube running on your Rpi mini computer!

ExTiX 19.3, Build 190307 based on upcoming Ubuntu 19.04, with Xfce 4.13, Kodi 18.2 “Leia”, Refracta Snapshot, Nvidia graphics driver and kernel 5.0.0-exton

NEWS 190307 ABOUT ExTiX Xfce4/Kodi, Build 190307
A new extra version of ExTiX is ready. This version is based on upcoming Ubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo. To be released in a stable version 190418. ExTiX 19.3 uses the Xfce Desktop 4.13 and kernel 5.0.0-exton. Xfce is a lightweight desktop environment for UNIX-like operating systems. It aims to be fast and low on system resources, while still being visually appealing and user friendly. This version of ExTiX Xfce4 is for non-UEFI computers. Kodi 18.2 Leia is also preinstalled in this version of ExTiX. Just start Kodi like any other program while logged in to the Xfce4 Desktop as the ordinary user live. I have enabled a few addons in Kodi. Most important the Netflix addon. Nvidia proprietary Graphics driver 418.43 is pre-installed in ExTiX 19.3. It will automatically be used if your computer has support for it. Study all pre-installed packages in ExTiX 19.3.

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL about ExTiX and especially the new version from 190307?
1. The ExTiX ISO’s are ISO-hybrids, which means that they can very easily be transferred (copied) to a USB pen drive. You can even run ExTiX from the USB stick and save all your system changes on the stick. I.e. you will enjoy persistence!
2. Another big improvement is that both ExTiX versions can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 3 (load to RAM). When the system has booted up you can remove the disc (DVD) or USB stick. You’ll need at least 3 GB RAM to run ExTiX 19.3 that way. Running from RAM means that the system will run faster than from a DVD or a USB stick. Everything will be superfast I would say!
3. All packages have been upgraded to the latest version by 190307.
4. Kernel 5.0.0 is the latest kernel by 190307.
5. I have replaced Ubuntu’s installation program Ubiquity (live installer) with Calamares. It works very well. I.e. a new user (your user) will be created during the installation process and you’ll get a chance to change root’s password. Just start the installer from the menu under System.
6. The best thing with ExTiX 19.3 is that while running the system live (from DVD/USB) or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu system.
7. As an alternative to Xfce4 you can run Kodi 18.2 Leia. Just start Kodi like any other program while logged in to the Xfce4 Desktop as the ordinary user live. I have enabled a few addons in Kodi. Most important the Netflix addon. NOTE: You can’t run Kodi as root. (You won’t have sound).
8. Nvidia proprietary Graphics driver 418.43 is pre-installed in ExTiX 19.3. It will be used automatically if your computer has support for it.

What’s new in kernel 5.0…

Kodi 18.2 in action – watch an animated GIF…

THE IMPORTANCE of ExTiX Xfce4 being based on Ubuntu 19.04 (UNSTABLE/DEVELOPMENT)
I don’t think it is too important since ExTiX Xfce4 doesn’t use complicated Desktop Environments like KDE or Gnome. Programs won’t crash or anything like that. And I haven’t discovered any bugs to report.

SCREENSHOTS

2. Kodi 18.2 running

DebEX Gnome, Build 190228, with Calamares Installer, Refracta snapshot and kernel 5.0.0-rc7-exton

NEWS 190228 about DebEX Gnome – a Refracta efi Build
I have made a new extra version of DebEX, which I call DebEX Gnome Live DVD. It’s a pure Debian system using the testing (buster) and unstable (sid) repositories. Gnome 3.30 (latest) is used as Desktop environment. I have removed the Mate Desktop, since Gnome now can be used on all kind of computers. Also when running DebEX in VirtualBox and VMware. No need for Nvidia’s proprietary graphics drivers when running this new version of DebEX. You can of course install such drivers if you want to.Furthermore I have replaced Google Chrome with Iceweasel. It is now possible to watch Netflix movies using Iceweasel (Firefox) in Linux. I have also replaced Refracta Installer with Calamares Installer, which makes it possible to install DebEX Gnome in any language. You can even use Calamares in VirtualBox and VMware – i.e. non-efi computers. All installed packages have been updated to the latest version as of 190228.  DebEX Gnome uses kernel 5.0.0-rc7-exton corresponding Kernel.org’s second latest kernel 5.0-rc7.

KERNEL
DebEX Gnome Build 190228 uses kernel 5.0.0-rc7-exton, corresponding Kernel.org‘s second latest kernel 5.0-rc7.

What’s new in kernel 5.0?

The real McCoy
DebEX Gnome is a pure Debian system. I.e. no traces of Ubuntu, Kubuntu etc. New releases of Ubuntu are always based on Debian unstable. So is DebEX.

ExLight 64bit efi, Build 190202, based on Debian Testing (“Buster”) with Enlightenment 0.22.4-2, Refracta Snapshot, Calamares and kernel 5.0.0-rc4-exton

NEWS 190202 ABOUT ExLight
I’ve made a new version of ExLight with the Enlightenment 0.22.4-2 Desktop environment and Calamares 3.2.3-2 Installer Framework .

New sources 190202
This new version of ExLight is based on Debian testing. I.e. cutting edge software is used. Build 190202 is a total rebuild of ExLight. The ISO file size has decreased from 1560 MB to 944 MB, which means that ExLight now can run even faster from RAM. I.e. load to RAM – screenshot.

DebEX (Debian “Buster”) with Budgie Desktop 10.4, Refracta Snapshot, Calamares and kernel 5.0.0-rc3-exton – Build 190128

NEWS 190128 about DebEX Budgie – a Refracta Build
A new version of DebEX Barebone with Budgie Desktop 10.4 and kernel 5.0.0-rc3-exton (equivalent to Kernel.org’s second latest kernel 5.0-rc3) is ready. All packages have been updated to the latest version as of January 28, 2019. DebEX Barebone is now based on Debian Buster (upcoming Debian 10). Most important: The ISO has decreased from 1330 MB to 925 MB, which makes it easier to run the system live from RAM. That ability allows DebEX Budgie to be very fast, since reading and writing data from/to RAM is much faster than on a hard disk drive. You can use the Calamares 3.2.3-2 Installer Framework to install DebEX Budgie to your computer in any language. You can even use Calamares in VirtualBox and VMware – i.e. non-efi computers. Watch this animated GIF.

What’s new in kernel 5.0?

The real McCoy
DebEX is a pure Debian system. I.e. no traces of Ubuntu, Kubuntu etc. New releases of Ubuntu are always based on Debian unstable. So is DebEX.

Important about Refracta
You can use the Refracta Snaphot (pre-installed in all three versions of DebEX) to create your own installable Debian Live DVD once you have installed DebEX to hard drive. I mean change everything and then create a whole new Debian live system. When you start Refracta it will look like this. You don’t even have to install DebEX to hard drive before you can use the Refracta tools. If you have plenty of RAM you can create a new (your own!) Debian system while running DebEX from DVD or a USB stick. Please note that the whole Refracta process (creating your new ISO) will only take 10 – 50 min! You’ll find your ISO in /home/snapshot.

Spotify
You can easily install Spotify in DebEX (even while running the system live). Just run the command sudo apt update followed by sudo apt install spotify-client. Watch a screenshot when Spotify is running in DebEX Budgie.

Rolling distribution
Debian/DebEX are rolling distributions, which implies that once you have installed the system on the hard drive there is no need for re-installations (which otherwise is common in the Linux world). This means, for example, that you can go on and install Gnome or/and KDE in DebEX Budgie.

SCREENSHOTS

2. The Budgie Desktop for root
3. DebEX installing and running Spotify

RaspEX Kodi Rpi3 with LXDE and Kodi 18 RC4 Media Center “Leia” with Netflix, Plex and Amazon Video addons – Build 190124

ABOUT RaspEX Kodi
RaspEX Kodi Build 190124 with LXDE/Kodi Desktops is made especially for the new Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, but can of course also be used on a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B and a Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. RaspEX Kodi is based on Debian, Raspbian and Kodi Media Center. In RaspEX Kodi I’ve added the LXDE Desktop with many useful applications such as VLC Media Player and NetworkManager. Makes it easy to configure your wireless network. I’ve also upgraded Kodi to a BETA version (Kodi 18 RC4 Leia), which makes it possible to include useful addons such as Netflix, Plex and Amazon Video. Which I’ve done. Study all included packages in RaspEX Kodi.

About RaspEX Kodi
Running RaspEX Kodi you will immediately end up in X and LXDE as the ordinary user raspex. After the first boot you shall use NetworkManager for configuring your network connection. Just click on the network icon in the upper right panel and chose your wireless network. Watch this screenshot. The big difference between Raspbian and RaspEX Kodi is that Kodi 18 RC4 Leia is pre-installed in RaspEX Kodi together with some really useful addons (Netflix, Plex and Amazon Video). Those addons need Widevine to run. While you are logged in to the LXDE Desktop you can use Synaptic Package Manager to install all extra packages you may need. Since RaspEX Kodi is based on Raspbian/Debian you’ll have about 30000 packages to chose between. When logged in as raspex you can use Sudo to become root. Example: sudo su and sudo pcmanfm. While logged in to the LXDE Desktop you can (of course) go on to Kodi directly. Just open Kodi like any other program. NOTE: You cannot run Kodi as root.

RaspEX Kodi performance

RaspEX Kodi is a very fast and responsive Rpi system. Much due to very low memory (RAM) usage. About 150 MB as this screenshot shows.
