PuppEX Bookworm64 (Puppy Linux) compatible with Debian Bookworm (upcoming Debian 12) :: Build 220714

NEWS ABOUT PuppEX Bookworm64 Build 220714 – TWO versions
My two new Puppy Linux derivatives are built using the Bookworm Build Script. They are compatible with Debian Bookworm – upcoming Debian 12. One version of 1070 MB (the ISO file) is for UEFI computers. The other one of 903 MB (the ISO file) is for non-UEFI computers and VirtualBox/VMware. The non-UEFI version can run i full screen in VirtualBox, since VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed. Watch this screenshot…

Debian 12
Compatible with Debian 12
means that you can use the apt command. (apt update, apt upgrade, apt install MyUsefulPackage etc) and Synaptic for installing thousands of new Debian packages in PuppEX. Both PuppEX Bookworm64 versions can easily be installed manually to hard drive if you have at least one Linux system installed. You must also use Grub as boot loader. Read more about how to do that at the INFO site.

PuppEX Jammy64 (Puppy Linux) compatible with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS :: Build 220630

NEWS ABOUT PuppEX Jammy64 22.04 220630
This Puppy derivative is built from Puppy_Linux_vanillapup 22.04.39, which is build from Ubuntu packages and packages build from source. Puppy_Linux_vanillapup is the best Puppy Linux system I’ve ever tried so I decided to make it even better. My changes of the original system:
1. I’ve replaced kernel 5.15 with kernel 5.18.7-exton
2. Development tools (build-essential) are installed
3. Latest Firefox is installed
4. Added the ntfs-3g package (so NTFS partitions are writable)
5. Added GParted
6. Added video codecs (libavcodec58) so that YouTube videos and Netflix movies can run in Firefox.
The ISO size has therefore increased from 343 MB to 628 MB, but PuppEX runs nevertheless as fast as the original Puppy, which means that it runs very very fast!

COMPATIBLE WITH Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

PuppEX Jammy64 is compatible with Ubuntu 22.04 (Jammy Jellyfish), which means that Ubuntu packages for Ubuntu 22.04 can be installed and used in PuppEX. You can use the Synaptic Package Manager or the apt command. (apt update, apt upgrade, apt install MyUsefulPackage etc).

IMPORTANT NOTE
: The normal remasterpup2 script (which is included in all Puppy Linux versions) doesn’t work in Puppy_Linux_vanillapup. I had to use my “special remaster tricks” to be able to build PuppEX Jammy64. I have therefore kept my two versions of PuppEX Focal64 20.04 in which the remasterpup2 script works very well. It works very well in PuppEX Slack64 15.0 too.

NOTE about VirtualBox: You can’t run this version of PuppEX in VirtualBox. PuppEX Jammy64 runs pretty well in Qemu in Linux thoughscreenshot.

PuppEX Slack64 15.0 built using Woof-CE scripts :: 220625

NEWS ABOUT PuppEX Slack64 15.0 220625
This Puppy Linux derivative is built by me using Puppy Linux Woof-CE Builder. It is compatible with Slackware 15.0 and uses kernel 5.18.6-exton. This Puppy system works very well on UEFI and non-UEFI computers. You can build your own Puppy Linux Slackware 15 compatible system using PuppEX as “groundwork”. Just start the remaster tool (Puppy simple CD remaster) and follow the instructions given by the remaster script. Watch this screenshot.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Use Balena Etcher when installing PuppEX to a USB stick in Windows. Other similar programs (like Rufus or Ventoy) won’t make the USB stick bootable.

MeX 64 bit Linux based on Debian Sid and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with Ubuntu Desktop (Gnome 40), Kodi 19.4 and kernel 5.18.3-amd64-exton :: Build 220617

NEWS/CHANGES 220617
I’ve uploaded a new version of MeX, in which I’ve included Kodi Matrix 19.4 – latest version. Kodi is an award-winning free and open source (GPL) software media player and entertainment hub that can be installed on Linux, OSX, Windows, iOS, tvOS and Android. It is designed around a “10-foot user interface” for use with televisions and remote controls. Kodi runs very well in MeX. On a web site called FireStickTricks you can find instructions how to install 27 (?!) extra Kodi Builds with their own repositories and skins. The article is called Best Kodi Builds December 2022. I’ve tried Grindhouse today. Works very well. Otherwise MeX version 220617 works in the same way as previous versions.

NEWS/CHANGES 220617
Mex Linux is no longer based on Linux Mint. MeX Build 220617 is based only on Debian Sid and Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy Jellyfish. I have replaced the original kernel (5.15) with “my” special kernel 5.18.3-amd64-exton. All installed packages in MeX Linux have been upgraded to the latest version by 220617. This version of MeX uses the Ubuntu Desktop Minimal. I.e. Gnome 40. The very nice icon theme Papirus is installed and used.

Important about Refracta
You can use the Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed in MeX Build 220617) to create your own installable Ubuntu Live DVD once you have installed MeX to hard drive. I mean change everything and then create a whole new Ubuntu 22.04 LTS live system. When you start Refracta Snapshot it will look like this. You don’t even have to install MeX to hard drive before you can use the Refracta Snapshot. If you have plenty of RAM you can create a new (your own!) Ubuntu system while running MeX from DVD or a USB stick. Please note that the whole Refracta process (creating your new ISO) will only take 10 – 30 min!

ExTiX Deepin 22.6 Live based on Deepin 20.6 (latest) with Refracta Snapshot and kernel 5.18.1-amd64-exton :: Build 220610

NEWS 220610 ABOUT ExTiX Deepin
I’ve released a new version of ExTiX Deepin today (220610). This ExTiX Build is based on Deepin 20.6 released by Deepin Technology 220531. Using Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed in ExTiX) you can make your own live installable Deepin version with ExTiX 22.6 as “groundwork”.

NEW FUNCTIONS etc

1. You can run ExTiX from RAM. Use boot alternative 2 (load to RAM) or Advanced. A wonderful way to run Linux if you have enough RAM. Everything will be super fast. When ExTiX has booted up you can remove the DVD or USB stick.
2. You will have the opportunity to choose language before you enter the Deepin 20.6 Desktop. All main languages are supported.
3. I have replaced Deepin Installer with the Reborn version of Deepin Installer. Works better in every way. Watch this movie (slideshow).
4. I have replaced kernel 5.16.0-exton with kernel 5.18.1-amd64-exton. Corresponding the second latest available stable kernel from Kernel.org.
5. Spotify and Skype are pre-installed.
6. You can watch Netflix while running Firefox.
7. You can install ExTiX Deepin also in VirtualBox/VMware using Refracta Installer or Deepin Installer. (In previous versions you had to “chroot” into the install partition and install Grub).
8. Install ExTiX to a USB stick preferably with Rufus 3.18 in Windows – see below how it looks.
9. In version 220610 I’ve also included Refracta Installer. Use it in VirtualBox if you want to have an exact copy of ExTiX Deepin installed. You don’t have to “chroot” to install Grub. Just choose to “Copy Grub files” when asked to. Watch this movie (slideshow).
NOTE1: If you want to remaster ExTiX Deepin you should use Refracta Installer. Using Deepin Installer some necessary packages (including Refracta Snapshot) will be removed during the installation process.
NOTE2: You can remaster (i.e. make your own live installable Deepin version) of ExTiX while running ExTiX live (i.e. from a USB stick or a DVD) if your computer has plenty of RAM. I could do that on a computer with 32GB RAM. I then started ExTiX live from RAM.
10. VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed. With those installed you can run ExTiX in full screen in VirtualBox. Watch this screenshot.

UNIQUE
I may add that there is no other live version of Deepin 20.6.

NEWS 220608 – AndEX 11 is ready!
I’ve uploaded AndEX 11 – andex-11-x86_64-gapps-220608-1450mb-version-final.iso. All included apps have been updated to the latest version. Also Google Play Services and Google Play Store.

NEWS 220608 about AndEX 11 with GAPPS
My first build of AndEX 11 is ready. It has GAPPS (Google Play Store etc) and many other apps pre-installed. This build of Android x86_64 11 – andex-11-x86_64-gapps-220608-1450mb-version-final.iso – can be installed to hard drive or on a USB stick. You can also run the system live. I.e. from a DVD or a USB stick. On some computers you’ll have to start up AndEX 11 in compatibility mode (VESA) though. The sound and video performance is generally very very good. Google Play Store works very well in this build of AndEX 11. So does the YouTube, Google Maps and Google Earth app. You can also run some video/movie apps with excellent video quality. For example SVT Play (Swedish) and TV4 Play (Swedish). Unfortunately not Netflix.

MORE ABOUT AndEX 11
My new compiled Android-x86_64 system (11) can run and be installed on almost all newer laptops (and some Desktop computers). For example Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5, Acer (Aspire), HP, Samsung, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo, Thinkpad, Fujitsu, Panasonic and Asus laptops. You can also run AndEX 11 in Qemu in Linux, but unfortunately not in VirtualBox and/or VMware. I can also mention that I could run my new 11 version on a HP All-in-One PC (with a touch screen), HP Pavilion 500-317no Desktop Computer and on a Lenovo ThinkStation C30. You can very easy do a “normal” or manual installation to hard drive. MX Linux Exton Remix 64bit with LXQt 1.1.0 (latest) and kernel 5.10 replaced by kernel 5.17.7-amd64-exton :: Build 220524

ABOUT my MX Linux Remix 220524
MX Linux (based on Debian) is by far the most popular Linux system in the world according to DistroWatch.com. I tested MX Linux a few months ago and noticed immediately that one can change the MX system and create a new ISO with MX Snapshot. My first MX Linux Remix is from 191018.

MX Linux 21
My first remix was based on MX Linux 18.3 (released in May 2019). MX Linux 21 Wildflower was released on October 21, 2021. It is based on Debian 11.3 (Stable/Bullseye).

My changes of the original MX Linux 21 system
1. All packages have been upgraded to the latest version as of 220524. Study the full package LIST.
2. The original kernel 5.10 is replaced by “my” kernel 5.17.7-amd64-exton.
3. I’ve added the LXQt Desktop. It’s in version 1.1.0 released on November 6, 2021. Version 1.1.0 is still not included in Debian’s repositories so I had to install LXQt 1.1.0 from source. (Took me a few hours). NOTE: I have (of course) also kept the original Xfce 4.16 Desktop.
4. You can run my MX Linux remix in full screen in VirtualBox, since VirtualBox Guest Additions are installed. Watch this screenshot.

5. Some cosmetic changes. I.e. new nice wallpapers.

Installation to a USB stick
Please note that you can only use Rufus 3.18 in Windows for USB installations. If you use other software the stick won’t be made bootable. Note also that you must write in DD image mode. One exception: You can without problems use Ventoy (instead of Rufus).

Performance
Everything in my remix works very well. MX Linux works on new and old computers. I can mention that I could run (and install) my MX remix without problems on my 17 year old laptop Acer Aspire 5102WLMi. You can of course make your own MX Linux Remix with my remix as “groundwork”. The whole process will only take about 5 minutes! Also in VirtualBox.

Login to the Xfce4 or the LXQt Desktop as live with password live or as root with password rootscreenshot.

Hard drive installations
Use MX Installer. It works very well.

Run latest Slackware 64 bit (15.0 STABLE) live and create your own live installable Slackware 15.0 system with Refracta Snapshot!

About SlackEX 15.0 64 bit Build 220518 (Xfce4), Build 220117 (Enlightenment/Xfce4) and Build 220110 (LXQt)

Slackware is the first widely-used Linux system, which is still developing. Slackware has existed since 1993. In comparison with for example Ubuntu and Linux Mint, many people believe that Slackware is “difficult”. Any novice can quickly learn to use Ubuntu they say. My remaster of Slackware Current (15.0), which I call SlackEX 15.0 Current 64 bit Linux Live DVD, is however just as easy to use as Ubuntu and/or Linux Mint. Some tend to complain that the Program Management in Slackware is awkward. That was perhaps earlier the case, but not anymore.

NEWS ABOUT SlackEX BUILD 220518 with the Xfce4 DESKTOP
A new version of SlackEX is ready. It is based on Slackware 15.0 STABLE released 220202 with Xfce4 as DE. The most important package installed is Refracta Snapshot. With that you can build your own Slackware 15.0 distribution. Xfce4 is one of Slackware’s official Desktop environments. The other one is KDE. Kernel 5.17.7-amd64-exton is used in this SlackEX Build. To be able to use Refracta Snapshot you’ll have to use said kernel. Otherwise you can (of course) replace “my” kernel with Slackware’s original kernel. Study the full package LIST.

Update/Upgrade from RC2 or RC3
As regards my other two SlackEX Builds you can easily upgrade the systems to Slackware 15.0 stable. Just run the command sudo slackpkg update followed by sudo slackpkg upgrade-all.

Run Raspberry Pi’s PIXEL Desktop on a PC or Mac – an Exton modified Build 220505 with Refracta Snapshot (so you can create your own Raspberrypi Debian 11 Pixel system)

NEWS 220505 about Raspberry Pi Debian 11 Pixel – 32bit – an Exton Build
My previous Debian Pixel Build from is from 201108 . Study all included packages in Build 220505 – latest by 220505. I’ve added NetworkManager and also Wicd, which makes it easier to configure wireless connections. Choose the one which works for you.

Most important changes in Build 220505
This build replaces version 161223 , 170425, 180316, 180928, 190705, 191102 and 201108 . I’ve upgraded Raspbian/Debian from Buster to Bullseye – Debian 11. I’ve also upgraded the kernel from 4.19.0-12-686-pae to 5.10.0-13-686-pae. I’ve also included kernel 5.10.0-13-686, which shall be used on older computers. PAE (Physical Address Extension) increases the physical memory addressable by the system from 4 GB to 64 GB. Firefox have been installed so you’ll have a browser when logged in as root. You can’t run Chromium as root. Another good thing about Firefox is that you can use it to watch Netflix movies. In Build 220505 I have removed Chromium. I saw no advantage in keeping it. You can run the system in full screen in VirtualBox. That’s because VirtualBox’s Guest Additions are pre-installed. Watch this screenshot.

NOTE

This Debian PIXEL 32bit build is for non-efi computers.

UNIQUE?
As far as I know there is no official Raspberry Pi OS (Raspbian) image with Debian 11.

NEWS 180928 – a YouTube video about Debian Pixel
I’ve discovered a YouTube video about my Debian Pixel Build 170425. The video is called Debian Pixel..Exton forks it for you..
This video is of course also valid for Build 220505. By watching the video you can learn a lot about Debian Pixel’s features.

OLD NEWS FROM 161223

On December 22, 2016 I read that the Raspberry Pi Foundation had announced the release of a new PIXEL image that can be booted on a PC or Mac. Study this site. I saw immediately that there was no installer included, which I thought was a little disappointing. Come to think of Refracta Tools, which work very well in Debian and Ubuntu. I quickly made a “remix” of the Raspberry Pi Foundation PIXEL image. My remix thus include Refracta Tools. This means that you can easily install the system to hard drive and you can just as easily make your own remix of the Raspberry Pi Foundation PIXEL image. I’ve added a few packages. Most important Synaptic, which I find essential.

About the PIXEL Desktop
Raspbian had its biggest update ever in September, 2016, thanks to a dazzling new desktop environment called PIXEL. Raspbian with PIXEL (which stands for “Pi Improved Xwindow Environment, Lightweight”) is a huge software update to the desktop environment. It introduces a crisp new interface, and is brimming with new programs and features.

VirtualBox and VMware
My build/image works very well in VirtualBox and VMware. I.e. you can run the system directly from the ISO file and also install it to a virtual hard drive. You can of course also make your own Raspbian/Debian system with the the PIXEL Desktop using Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed). NOTE: As regards Build 220505 you can run the system in full screen in VirtualBox. That’s because VirtualBox’s Guest Additions are pre-installed. Watch this screenshot.

KERNEL
Kernel 5.10.0-13-686-pae is used in Build 220505. PAE (Physical Address Extension) increases the physical memory addressable by the system from 4 GB to 64 GB. If you want to run the system (which is 32bit) on older computers you shall use kernel 5.10.0-13-686, which also is included.

Login and passwords
Log in to the PIXEL Desktop as the ordinary user pi or as root. The passwords are raspberrypi respectively root. When logged in as pi you can use Sudo to become root. (Command: sudo su). When running Debian Pixel live (from a DVD or a USB stick) you’ll end up (after the boot process) logged in automatically as the user pi in X (PIXEL Desktop).

Windows Virtual Desktop on Azure
For smoother Raspberry PI performance a virtual PC such as azure windows virtual desktop which can be the best option due to its high end functionality and 24*7 top-notch support from a reliable desktop as a service provider.

Runs from RAM
Another great thing is that this build can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 2 (load to RAM). When the system has booted up you can remove the disc (DVD) or the USB stick. You’ll need at least 4 GB RAM to run the system that way. I.e. super fast!

Spotify
You may want to run Spotify. In this version of Debian Pixel you can’t install Spotify with the command sudo apt install spotify-client. Too many unfulfilled dependencies. You can, however, run Spotify Web Player. Use Firefox for that. Watch a screenshot when Spotify Web Player is running.

Important about Refracta
You can use the Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own installable Raspberry Pi Debian 11 PIXEL system once you have installed my build to hard drive. I mean change everything and then create a whole new Debian live system. Start Refracta from Menu >> System tools >> Refracta snapshot. You don’t even have to install my build to hard drive before you can use the Refracta Snapshot. If you have plenty of RAM you can create a new (your own!) Debian PIXEL system while running my build from DVD or a USB stick. Please note that the whole Refracta process (creating your new ISO file) will only take 20 – 60 min! Please edit the configuration file /etc/refractasnapshot.conf first. Change line 45 and 46. I.e. decide where you want the ISO file to be build. The whole thing is very simple. NOTE: You can also do everything in VirtualBox or VMware. Use FileZilla (pre-installed) to transfer your new ISO file to your server. Or use Samba to transfer the ISO file to one of your Windows computers in your home Network – screenshot. NOTE: Do it while logged in as root.

Install to Debian PIXEL hard drive
Just start Refracta Installer from the Menu >> System tools >> Refracta Installer and follow the instructions. Very simple. After a hard drive installation Grub’s boot menu will look like this.

Install Debian PIXEL to a USB stick

You can use Rufus in Windows. Persistence can’t be enabled though. The best way to do it is to burn Debian PIXEL to a DVD, start up the system from the DVD and then use Refracta Installer for the installation. Choose to install Grub in MBR on /dev/sdb. (Normally your USB stick, but check it carefully!) I.e. you will get a chance to choose between /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. This method will (of course) give you perfect persistence.

Watch the slideshow below showing the Refracta installation process in Debian PIXEL.

Windows Virtual Desktop on Azure
For smoother RaspberryPI performance a virtual PC such as azure windows virtual desktop which can be the best option due to its high end functionality and 24*7 top-notch support from a reliable desktop as a service provider.

I’ve made a new updated “mini” version of ExTiXThe Ultimate Linux System. It is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy Jellyfish. The ISO file is of only 1340 MB, which is good if you want to run the system super fast from RAM. It should be enough with 2GB RAM. When the boot process is ready you can eject the DVD or USB stick. Use Boot alternative 2. The best thing with ExTiX 22.5 is that while running the system live (from DVD/USB) or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu 22.04 system. So easy that a ten year child can do it! ExTiX 22.5 uses kernel 5.17.2-amd64-exton. Ubuntu 22.04 LTS will be supported until April 2027.

Study all pre-installed packages in ExTiX 22.5.

More about ExTiX 22.5
This ExTiX version uses LXQt as Desktop environment. LXQt is the Qt port and the upcoming version of LXDE, the Lightweight Desktop Environment. It is the product of the merge between the LXDE-Qt and the Razor-qt projects: A lightweight, modular, blazing-fast and user-friendly desktop environment. NOTE: This ExTiX LXQt Build is for older UEFI-enabled computers and VirtualBox/VMware. When running ExTiX 22.5 in VirtualBox you can do it in full screen since VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed. Watch this screenshot.
