PuppEX Jammy64 (Puppy Linux) compatible with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS :: Build 230222

NEWS ABOUT PuppEX Jammy64 22.04 230222
This Puppy derivative is built from Puppy_Linux_vanillapup 22.04.39, which is build from Ubuntu packages and packages build from source. Puppy_Linux_vanillapup is the best Puppy Linux system I’ve ever tried so I decided to make it even better. My first version of PuppEX Jammy64 is from 220630.
My changes of the original system 230222:
1. I’ve replaced kernel 5.15 with kernel 6.1.12-exton with support for “extra everything”
2. Development tools (build-essential) are installed
3. Latest Firefox and Google Chrome are pre-installed
4. Added the ntfs-3g package (so NTFS partitions are writable)
5. Added GParted
6. Added video codecs (libavcodec58) so that YouTube videos and Netflix movies can run in Firefox.
The ISO size has therefore increased from 343 MB to 879 MB, but PuppEX runs nevertheless as fast as the original Puppy, which means that it runs very very fast!
NOTE: On some computers you may have to wait 60 seconds before the boot process starts. You will see a message saying “Pausing for 60 seconds…”
This error won’t occur after a hard drive (frugal) installation.
COMPATIBLE WITH Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
PuppEX Jammy64 is compatible with Ubuntu 22.04 (Jammy Jellyfish), which means that Ubuntu packages for Ubuntu 22.04 can be installed and used in PuppEX. You can use the Synaptic Package Manager or the apt command. (apt update, apt upgrade, apt install MyUsefulPackage etc).
IMPORTANT NOTE: The normal remasterpup2 script (which is included in all Puppy Linux versions) doesn’t work in Puppy_Linux_vanillapup. I had to use my “special remaster tricks” to be able to build PuppEX Jammy64. I have therefore kept my two versions of PuppEX Focal64 20.04 in which the remasterpup2 script works very well. It works very well in PuppEX Slack64 15.0 too.
NOTE about VirtualBox/VMware: You can’t run this version of PuppEX in VirtualBox or VMware. PuppEX Jammy64 runs pretty well in Qemu in Linux though.

Exton|Defender (Fedora Rawhide/38) with the Cinnamon 5.6.5 Desktop and kernel 6.2-rc5-fc38 :: Build 230201

ABOUT BOTH Exton|Defender versions
Exton|Defender SRS – based on Fedora “Rawhide” (upcoming Fedora 38), 64 bit – is a Linux system available as a Live USB/DVD for administrating or repairing your system and data after a crash. It aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the hard disk partitions. It comes with a lot of Linux software such as system tools and basic tools (editors, Midnight Commander, network tools). Exton|Defender can, however, also be used as a normal Linux Desktop System. It requires no installation, but can be installed to hard drive if you like. Desktop Environments: Deepin 20.8 (in Build 230130) and Cinnamon 5.6.5 (in Build 230201). Used kernel in both versions: 6.2.rc5-fc38.

NEWS 230201 about Exton|Defender fc38 (Fedora 38)
I’ve made a new extra version of Exton|Defender 64 bit based on Fedora “Rawhide” (the development version of Fedora). I.e. upcoming Fedora 38. The new version uses the Cinnamon 5.6.5 Desktop and kernel 6.2-rc5-fc38. All other installed packages are the same as in version 230130. Study all installed packages.
NOTE: Version 230201 of Exton|Defender can run on really old computers. As an example I could run it on my 17 years old laptop Acer Aspire 5102 WLMi. Watch this screenshot.

ABOUT the Cinnamon Desktop Environment
Cinnamon is a free and open-source desktop environment for Linux and Unix-like operating systems, deriving from GNOME 3 but following traditional desktop metaphor conventions. Read more about Cinnamon. And read also a review of Cinnamon 5.6.

Exton|Defender (Fedora Rawhide/38) with the Deepin Desktop and kernel 6.2-rc5-fc38 :: Build 230130

Exton|Defender SRS is a Linux system available as a Live DVD/USB based on Fedora Rawhide, 64bit. (Rawhide is the development version of Fedora). Exton|Defender is for administrating or repairing your system and data after a crash. Exton|Defender aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the hard disk partitions. It comes with a lot of Linux software such as system tools and basic tools (editors, Midnight Commander, network tools). Exton|Defender can, however, also be used as a normal Linux Desktop System. It requires no hard drive installation, but can easily be installed to hard drive if you want. Desktop environment: Deepin 20.8. Since Fedora 37 was released 221115 this version of Exton|Defender can be seen as a “test” release. At first I was thinking of making a remaster of Fedora 37 with Cinnamon. Then I discovered that you can download an “official” Fedora 37 ISO with Cinnamon. You can also download some Rawhide “spins”. No one with the Deepin Desktop Environment though (as far as I know). So Exton|Defender Build 230130 must be UNIQUE!

ABOUT the Deepin Desktop Environment
Deepin DE (made in China!) is devoted to providing a beautiful, easy to use, safe and reliable system for global users. I came to like Deepin DE very much when I installed it in ExTiX and ArchEX. So I thought why not install the Deepin DE also in Exton|Defender?

System Tools included
NTFS-3g, GParted, PartImage, Shred, Sfdisk (util-linux-ng), Rsync, Ddrescue, FSArchiver, TestDisk and Midnight Commander. Other programs (among many others): NetworkManager, Firefox, Parole Media Player, Samba, Java and Java Runtime Environment (JRE), Emacs, Safecopy, kernel headers and many compilation tools. Exton|Defender uses kernel 6.2-rc5-fc38. Study all installed packages…

The live boot screen

THE IMPORTANCE OF Exton|Defender being based on upcoming Fedora 38
Programs won’t “crash” or anything like that. And I haven’t noticed any “bugs”. That said you should of course be a bit careful. This version of Exton|Defender is for people who like to use “cutting-edge” software and the latest kernels etc. You will always have the latest Linux/Fedora software installed if you regularly run the command sudo dnf upgrade –refresh.

exGENT (Gentoo Linux) 64bit live system with LXDE, systemd and kernel 6.1.7 :: Build 230121

NEWS 230121 about exGENT (Gentoo) 64 bit
I’ve made a new extra version of exGENT with only a few necessary packages pre-installed. The system is built from “scratch”. I.e. installed the “Gentoo way” following the Gentoo Handbook. It uses LXDE as Desktop Environment and kernel 5.15.80-gentoo-x86_64 (Gentoo’s original kernel) while running the system live (from a DVD or a USB stick). After a hard drive installation kernel 6.1.7 (latest stable kernel version) will be used. The ISO file is of only 2050 MB compared to exGENT LXQt Build 230109, which is of 3450 MB.  Study all installed packages in Build 230121. This exGENT build is not a replacement for Build 230109.

exGENT (Gentoo) 64bit Live DVD/USB with LXQt 1.2, Calamares Installer and kernel 5.15.80-gentoo-x86_64 – Build 230109 – can be installed to hard drive in 3 min!

NEWS 230109 about exGENT (Gentoo) 64 bit
I’ve made a new version of exGENT with only a few necessary packages pre-installed. It uses LXQt 1.2 (latest version) as Desktop Environment and kernel 5.15.80-gentoo-x86_64 (Gentoo’s original kernel). The ISO file is of 3450 MB. Despite this exGENT version 230109 runs surprisingly fast from DVD or a USB stick. Even in VirtualBox and VMware. Faster than most other Linux live systems I would say. I call my new version exGENT 2023 LXQt Live DVD/USB. It replaces version 210122. All installed packages in exGENT have been updated to the latest available version by 230109 using Gentoo’s repos. Study the full package list.
NOTE: As you can see it is almost two years since the previous version of exGENT was released. That’s because everything with Gentoo is extremely time consuming. Installing Gentoo the “Gentoo way” can take several days to perform.

Quick installation to Hard Drive
exGENT Linux can be installed to hard drive in 3 – 20 min. (Depending on computer type). This means that all of you who might hesitate to perform a normal Gentoo installation – which can take up to a couple of days – now have the chance to get this great Linux system (Gentoo) installed on your computers very easy. Read my instruction about how the installation works.

Who is exGENT/Gentoo for?

Experienced Linux users or those who really want to learn Linux. (Perhaps also for people who are bored with mainstream distributions like Ubuntu).

Run Android apps directly in Windows 11!

Recently I came across an article called How to Sideload Any Android App on Windows 11. There are many similar articles out there, but the one I refer to is easiest to follow. So with Windows 11 it is possible to sideload Android apps natively without any third-party application. I followed the instructions to the letter. I am now able to run most Android apps on two of my computers in Windows 11. One computer with a touchscreen, which can be useful when running Android apps.

When I had done everything stated in the article I could start the app Windows Subsystem For Android. See the screenshot below.

When running the Amazon app I could choose to download and install hundreds of Android apps. Many quite advanced. For example LEGO Boost. See a screenshot below.

I could also download apk files an install them via ADB. See a screenshot below when I’m installing the Photo Lab app.

Finally a screenshot below showing how it looks when the Amazon Appstore is running.

All Android apps installed on your computer gets integrated in Windows menus. Watch this screenshot below.

Everything is very easy to set up. And it’s fun too! You should try it.

MX Linux 21.2.1 Exton Remix 64bit with Xfce/LXQt DE and kernel 5.10 replaced by kernel 6.1.0-amd64-exton :: Build 221228

ABOUT my MX Linux 21.2.1 Remix 221228
MX Linux (based on Debian) is by far the most popular Linux system in the world according to DistroWatch.com. I tested MX Linux a few years ago and noticed immediately that one can change the MX system and create a new ISO with MX Snapshot. My first MX Linux Remix is from 191018. And my second remix was ready 220524.

MX Linux 21.2.1
My first remix was based on MX Linux 18.3 (released in May 2019). MX Linux 21.2.1 Wildflower was released on September 18, 2022. It is based on Debian 11.6 (Stable/Bullseye).

My changes of the original MX Linux 21.2.1 system
1. All packages have been upgraded to the latest version as of 221228. Study the full package LIST.
2. The original kernel 5.10 is replaced by “my” kernel 6.1.0-amd64-exton.
3. I’ve added the LXQt Desktop. It’s in version 1.1.0 released on November 6, 2021.  I have installed LXQt 1.1.0 from source. (Took me a few hours). NOTE: I have (of course) also kept the original Xfce 4.16 Desktop.
4. You can run my MX Linux remix in full screen in VirtualBox, since VirtualBox Guest Additions are installed. Watch this screenshot. You can also run MX in full screen in VMware Workstation Player. Watch this screenshot.

5. Some cosmetic changes. I.e. nice wallpapers. I have kept the wallpapers from version 220524.

Installation to a USB stick
Please note that you can only use Rufus 3.21 in Windows for USB installations. If you use other software the stick won’t be made bootable. Note also that you must write in DD image mode. One exception: You can without problems use Ventoy (instead of Rufus).

Performance
Everything in my remix works very well. MX Linux works on new and old computers. I can mention that I could run (and install) my MX remix without problems on my 17 year old laptop Acer Aspire 5102WLMi. You can of course make your own MX Linux Remix with my remix as “groundwork”. The whole process will only take about 5 minutes! Also in VirtualBox. Watch this screenshot showing how it looks when MX Snapshot has started.

Login to the Xfce4 or the LXQt Desktop as live with password live or as root with password root – see below how it looks.

Hard drive installations
Use MX Installer. It works very well. Watch a YouTube Video about it.

Create your own MX Linux Remix
Use MX Snapshot. It is very easy to do. The whole process will only take about 5 minutes! Also in VirtualBox. Watch this screenshot showing how it looks when MX Snapshot has started.
